Clear purpose
At Fundación eco-bahia, we have a clear purpose: to care for and teach others to care for living beings that serve as indicators of environmental health. There are forms of life that often go unnoticed, yet they sustain the balance of everything we know—such as butterflies.
During Global Butterfly Week, we chose to shine a spotlight on them through Alas y colores (Wings and Colors), an initiative designed to bring the importance of this species closer to the community through experience, education, and action. From our base in Mexico, we planned a vibrant week of butterfly-centered activities, inviting people to learn about and better understand this key species in maintaining healthy ecosystems.
June 1 – Nature Walk & Afterschool Activity
We kicked off the week on June 1 with a nature walk alongside the children from the Tulum hotel Kids Club. Throughout the activity, participants became young explorers, observing and recording the butterflies they encountered in their surroundings. It was a chance to train our attention and rediscover the extraordinary within the everyday.
That same day, we also introduced key content into the educational program at Tulum Country Club, focusing on the butterfly life cycle and its metamorphosis. Watching the transformation from caterpillar to chrysalis and finally to butterfly allowed the children to connect with the fragility of these processes and understand why protecting their habitats is essential.
In this regard, it is important to highlight that one of Fundación eco-bahia’s core areas of action is environmental education. We work to foster awareness, respect, and knowledge among younger generations—those who will hold the key to the future of our ecosystems.
June 2 – Fabric Butterfly Workshop
On June 2, awareness turned into creativity. During a workshop with children from the Kids Club, participants created butterflies using materials such as fabric, recycled paper, and jute.
This activity not only encouraged imagination, but also reinforced essential values such as material reuse and respect for natural resources. Beyond creativity, it offered a hands-on way for children to learn more about butterflies.
June 3 – Native Plant Donation
Conservation efforts continued on June 3 with the donation of native plant seeds to the Chemuyil community, helping to create suitable habitats for butterflies and other pollinators.
June 5 – Mexico’s Flora and Fauna Fair
The week concluded on June 5—coinciding with World Environment Day—with Fundación Eco-Bahía’s participation in the Flora and Fauna Sustainability Fair in Mexico.
Through a stand dedicated to butterfly conservation, we created a space for dialogue with the community to share knowledge, answer questions, and above all, inspire new ways of connecting with our natural environment.
The Importance of Butterflies in Ecosystems
Butterflies are key indicators of environmental health and play a fundamental role as pollinators, contributing to the reproduction of numerous plant species and the preservation of biodiversity.
The initiatives led by Fundación eco-bahia help raise community awareness and support efforts to protect butterflies. As essential environmental indicators, they play a crucial role as pollinators, ensuring biodiversity conservation while also contributing to the development of sustainable, nature-based tourism.
